I worked for an employer a couple years ago, I had to move to a new town to get the job. It is a small company with less than 20 employees. I was good at my job, except for the fact that it put a strain on my family back home by being gone all the time. I had a verbal altercation with an employee in one of our field offices. My supervisor sat down with me and suggested I resign because the job was putting too much stress on my family, and I agreed. She said my separation would be marked as a layoff, as she didn’t want to damage my record, and I thanked her. I’m now expecting a prospective employer to do a background check on me, and there is new management at my old employer. I called them to ask about my employment record because I want to be sure a background check will come back favorably. The manager said all they can verify are dates of employment. Isn’t that a little odd? I thought that even the most confidential employers would at least report reason for separation and re-hire eligibility, but the current manager said they can’t even reveal that. That job did involve federal oversight in certain areas… but I’m wondering if that verbal altercation has come back to haunt me, or the HR manager is telling me the truth.
