I worked from 14 thru about 24. Then I became self employed and never contributed anything extra other than my regular IRA for about 10-11 years. ($ 2000 a year) I never earned much at all. Maybe $ 22,000 from a regular job for 2 years. the rest, far, far less. I never expected or planned for a dime but now that I’m 55 and played with a life expectancy calculator, I realize I may live a helluva lot longer than I thought. And I’m drinking a beer to help. (Drinking 2-7 beers per week extends my life 6 months versus 0-2) Insurance is another question. The ACA has been good to me because I’m healthy and I have low income. So the high deductible policies aren’t an issue. And the subsides pay a ton of it. But I’m sure that wont continue. Am I inline for any kind of SS when I get older ? What about Medicare ? Does having assets kill it ? I don’t mean ultra rich but I don’t work at 55 and my very modest house & car are paid for.
