I am really struggling with this and it looks to me like what I am achieving is impossible. My device is Android 6 Marshmellow. Not sure the exact version though.
I need to perform a ‘local backup’ of WhatsApp on my Android device. Unfortunately, in replacing a broken screen for the dozenth time (long story), I damaged my phone’s motherboard by chipping this little metal thing next to my LCD flex cable’s connector. The net result: LCD screens are now completely unusable (no touch vibration feedback but I CAN access Whatsapp via the Web app). I can see some light on the LCD screen when I press the power button: it’s like a faint grey oval shape. But it’s just light; no actual content is displayed.
I’d prefer not sending this for professional repair or using commercial software due to privacy concerns. If you can recommend from personal experience any open-source software that can backup Whatsapp chats via PC only and can be trusted, let me know. If you know of any software that at least still work, please let me know still and I’ll investigate them myself; I may try a software if I completely run out of options. There’s no need to point out the irony that I’m using Windows 10 for adb and I am concerned about privacy here. I had this PC as trusted for adb beforehand – out of necessity (long story).
I disabled Cloud backups on Whatsapp so I can only perform local backups. The last local backup was 10 days ago. I know this because I can copy all my files via the command:
adb pull -a
The last dated backup under /sdcard/Whatsapp/Databases/ is dated as such.
I can use adb tools since I enabled USB debugging with my Windows 10 PC before this screw up.
I cannot see my screen or touch it. I have a password lock enabled but no encryption. So when I disconnect my battery and turn it on, the phone boots automatically without requiring a password input.
adb backup -all -f [destination]
To backup all apps. This required me to unlock my device to confirm the backup operation. Fail. Maybe it will not require authentication via the screen if I only backup the Whatsapp files and .apk but I need the .apk file name for Whatsapp and the only way I know how to do this is via an Android app. More info on adb backup: https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-nexus/general/guide-phone-backup-unlock-root-t1420351
I installed Wondershare MirrorGo on my PC which allegedly allows me to control my Android screen via PC (mouse and keyboard) and shows my screen on the PC, without requiring anything to be installed on my Android phone. But it gets stuck at 90% when connecting. I suspect this may be caused by the part of my motherboard that I damaged.
Perform a ‘local backup’ of Whatsapp via command line like you are able to with ALL software in Linux. This is impossible as far as I know. If anyone has a solution to this, please let me know.
Perform a local backup via Whatsapp Web App. Not possible because this feature was not provided by the Whatsapp team. Thanks Whatsapp(!)
Copy all Whatsapp files and folders to my new Android device (have not purchased it yet). I will find out which file or folder belongs to Whatsapp purely by name. And then I will launch Whatsapp on my new device hoping it will work. Essentially this idea is predicated in my assumption that all a ‘local backup’ does is take all those aforementioned files and folders and condense them into a single file. My assumption is also that no Whatsapp file or folder is incorrectly named or that none of the files are encrypted/encoded to work on only that exact device.
I could use a software to backup the contents of Whatsapp. Though I feel very uneasy about this. And I would need a software that does not require any interaction with my phone screen.
I could get my motherboard repaired professionally and hope they do not damage it further, copy my personal files for evil purposes (violating Data Protection Act), factory reset my device or replace my motherboard.
I got this working – as the developer intended. However, cmd returns the error “Can’t read input file”. I copied the screenshot from my Android device and it is pitch black! This leads me to believe that I broke a/the part of my motherboard that is responsible for displaying anything on the screen. Damn.
Get Whatsapp to perform a local backup automatically. I have no idea why it is not doing this itself. It should be!!!
If anyone has any idea on how to solve this, I really would appreciate it so much!!
